The two numbers that show whether your website really works

Counting visitors says little. These two numbers show exactly whether your website pays off.

Many business owners look at one number when it comes to their website: how many visitors there were this month. It feels good when it goes up, but it actually says very little. A hundred visitors who buy nothing earn you less than ten visitors who do.

The first number, conversion rate

Conversion rate is simple: out of every hundred visitors, how many actually do what you hope for. That can be a purchase, but also filling in a contact form or booking an appointment. If a webshop sells socks and a thousand visitors come in per month, of whom twenty actually buy, the conversion rate is two percent. That number tells you exactly where to put your attention, far more than the number of visitors alone.

The second number, customer value

Customer value shows how much a customer brings in over the whole time they stay a customer, not just with that first order. The same sock shop may sell a set for twenty euros, but if that customer comes back four times a year and stays for three years, that customer is actually worth two hundred and forty euros. That completely changes how much you can afford to spend on winning that customer.

Why you often do not see these two

The problem is usually not that these numbers are out of reach, but that they are spread across different systems that do not talk to each other. Your order data sits in the webshop, your repeat purchases in the bookkeeping and your visitor numbers in a separate analytics tool. Only when that data comes together in one system can you see at a glance whether your website actually pays off, instead of guessing based on a visitor count.
