Your customer no longer asks Google, they ask ChatGPT
More and more people get their answer straight from AI, without visiting a single website. This decides whether your business is mentioned in that answer.
Say you are a gardener and someone is looking for a garden designer nearby. In the past that person typed a search term into Google, opened a few sites and compared. More and more often that no longer happens. The question goes to ChatGPT or to the AI answer at the top of Google, and that answer names a few businesses, without the user ever visiting a website.
For a gardener who sits neatly on page one, that feels unfair. You have worked for years on your position in the search results, and now an AI model decides in a few seconds which businesses are mentioned, regardless of that position. What AI takes into account is very different from a classic search engine: not keyword density, but clear, self contained answers to the questions people really ask. What does it cost to lay a border. How long does pond maintenance take. How much space does a tree need.
A website that only has nice photos and a contact form gives an AI model nothing to quote. A website that actually answers those questions concretely, in plain language and with a clear structure, gives that model something to work with. That is why we do not build AEO as a separate extra afterwards, but as part of the site itself from the start: the content has to be there so that an AI model can find and cite it, not only after the site is already finished.
For a small business the question therefore shifts. Not only "am I high enough", but "does my website give an AI model something valuable to say about me". That is a question you can already answer today, without throwing out the whole site.
