AI that makes something for you is nice, AI that works with you is valuable

More and more business owners use AI for a quick text or a picture. The real benefit is somewhere else, and you miss it if you never look.

Chances are you have used ChatGPT to write a social media post, or to make a picture for a promotion. Handy, quick, and nothing wrong with it. Still, this is usually the easiest part of what AI can do for a small business.

The difference between a trick and a colleague

Having a text written is AI making something for you, once, separate from the rest of your business. It becomes more valuable when AI works inside what you already do: summarising an incoming phone call and putting it in your customer file automatically, answering a quote request based on quotes you sent before, or checking an invoice before it goes out.

An example from practice

Take a contractor who gets messages and emails every day asking about the status of a job. Having a text written does not solve that. A system that recognises those questions, pulls the right answer from the planning and sends it back automatically saves him time every single day, without him having to look at it.

Why most businesses get stuck here

Research among Dutch business owners shows that AI use has risen sharply, but that most of it stays with texts and pictures. That is not strange, because it is the most visible part and the easiest to try. The part where time is really won back sits in your own processes, and that takes someone who looks beyond a one-off trick.

If you recognise yourself in using AI for texts and pictures, the question worth asking is not what else AI can write, but which recurring task in your business no longer needs a person at all.
