What is workflow automation?

Workflow automation is making recurring business processes run automatically, such as sending appointment confirmations, creating invoices or following up on enquiries, with software performing the steps that would otherwise be done by hand.

Context

The gain rarely sits in one big task, but in the sum of small tasks that return every week. A confirmation after a booking, a reminder before an appointment, an invoice after a delivery: each takes a few minutes, together they take hours. Automation takes over exactly that repetitive part, so the business owner only needs to look at the exceptions.

The precondition is that the data lives in one place. Automation that has to work across separate tools breaks as soon as one of those tools changes. Within a single platform, where customers, appointments and invoices already come together, an automated workflow is nothing more than a standing agreement inside the system itself.
