What is a customer portal?

A customer portal is a secure online space where customers can view their own invoices, appointments or documents — without having to call or email.

Definition

A customer portal is a secure online space, connected to the website or business system, where customers can view and manage their own data, invoices, appointments or documents.

Context

For service providers, a large share of customer contact is repetitive: 'when is my appointment', 'can I get that invoice again', 'what's the status of my request'. A customer portal answers those questions without intervention — the customer logs in and sees it themselves.

The difference from standalone tools (a separate invoicing system, a separate booking calendar) is that a customer portal brings that information together in one place, connected to the same system as the rest of the business. That saves the customer from needing multiple logins, and saves the business owner from answering the same question over and over.
